Obligatory TL;DR
I made a DIY BedJet thing. It's an axial fan hooked up to an air duct via a custom 3D modeled adapter. On the other end of the air duct is a custom 3D modeled mouthpiece for the air pushed by the fan to exhaust from. Photos at the bottom, enjoy!

I'd seen multiple bed cooling solutions online such as the Eight Sleep, the Chilipad, and the BedJet. What held me back was mainly the upfront cost and the inability to test-run them to see how effective they really were for me. I was actually most skeptical about the BedJet seeing as it's mostly just a fancy fan system blowing under the sheets, but it was also the most affordable one out the three. So, I decided to cobble together my own bed-jet-lite system to test out the theory. I wanted to answer a few questions:
  • Will air even circulate properly under my blanket with how my bed is setup, or do I have to change more things about my setup than I'd like to?
  • Can I even fall asleep with air blowing at me under my blanket?
  • Does circulating air under my blanket as I sleep actually help me stay cool and sleep better or will it just make me too cold at night?
With a spare 10-inch axial fan I had lying around, some custom 3D modeled/printed parts, 8-feet of 10-inch diameter air duct, and a jury-rigged AC motor controller, I attempted to answer those questions.

For a BedJet the recommendation is to use a flat sheet and a duvet, at least that's what I've observed in all of their promotional pictures. They even sell their own special flat sheet to go with their system. But, personally, I prefer using a fleece throw as my blanket. I noticed that when setup just right, there were no problems with getting air to circulate under the blanket, even at low power, but, as I moved around my bed throughout the night, I would occasionally block or tangle the blanket around the mouthpiece of my fan system. It was likely a mix of not affixing my blanket to the mouthpiece well enough (which is why I designed the additional clip you now see below in the second picture) and the weight and flexibility of my blanket. I imagine with a duvet, which tend to be stiffer, this might be less of an issue.

As for whether or not I could actually sleep at night with a fan essentially blowing at my feet... I'd say yes; I got used to it pretty quick after dialing in the fan speed just right. Now for the big question, did it actually keep me cool? It did. Early on I'd get a little too cold, but, after some tweaking, I eventually found a good setting. I'd occasionally wake up to adjust it in the middle of the night but still waking up much less than I would be if I had to endure the heat unaided. So, in short, the BedJet would probably work well for me, especially since it supports automated speed and temperature control. But, I'll make do with what I have for now.
